Villages of Azeitão
The route “Aldeias de Azeitão”, in addition to its natural splendor that characterizes this region, also presents a cultural nature and several points of heritage interest . It can be completed in its entirety or you can choose a shorter route following the indications for the SR 4.1 variant at km 6.0.
On this route, you will discover the origins of Azeitão, a territory within the Arrábida Nature Park. The name is of Arabic origin stemming from the word azzeittum, because of the extensive olive groves found here. Its boundaries date back to medieval times and its origins lie in agriculture, namely vine and olive growing, which influenced the landscape and is still predominant on the farms and small settlements.
Overlooked by the Arrábida Mountains, Azeitão gained prestige from the 15th century onwards as one of the favourite regions of the Portuguese aristocracy. Starting and finishing in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, this trail takes us through villages such as Aldeia Rica, Oleiros, Aldeia de Irmãos, the villages of Piedade, Portela and São Pedro, Casais da Serra and Picheleiros, always under the imposing Arrábida Mountains and its most traditional paths.
The shorter variant (SR 4.1) is ideal for those with a special interest in cultural heritage, in addition to the natural one, allowing you to get to know the various chapels, fountains and emblematic places that make Azeitão such a historically rich place.
